American illustrator and painter Norman Rockwell made Stockbridge famous. Rockwell lived in Stockbridge from 1953 until his death in 1978. The Norman Rockwell Museum is one of the top destinations in the Berkshires, and it has plenty of in-town company. Residents cherish the Stockbridge Bowl with its 372-acre lake, the Red Lion Inn, and Gilded Age estate-turned-museum Namukeag. Stockbridge is also home to Chesterwood, the summer estate of American sculptor Daniel Chester French, and the Berkshire Botanical Garden.
